Every day, more than 6,000 children across Texas wait in foster care for a place to call home. The Heart Gallery of Northwest Texas, based in Abilene, works to change that—one portrait at a time.
The Heart Gallery displays professional photographs and short biographies of children and teens in the Texas foster care system whose parental rights have been terminated. The portraits, taken by volunteer photographers, help connect these young people with potential adoptive families while restoring a sense of dignity and hope.
Sponsored by 2INgage, the Heart Gallery of Northwest Texas serves communities across the Big Country and Texoma regions. Through a contract with the State of Texas, 2INgage manages community-based foster-care services across 30 counties, including Abilene and Wichita Falls.
Each youth featured in the gallery gives consent to share their story and photograph publicly—a key part of the organization’s trauma-informed approach. Staff work closely with the youth and trusted adults in their lives to ensure that participation is voluntary and empowering.
“Our goal is to give every child a chance to be seen and to be known,” said representatives with the Heart Gallery. “Each smile you see represents individuality, resilience, and the hope of finding a forever family.”
The portraits are displayed in community spaces, online, and through local events designed to raise awareness about adoption. Beyond matching children with adoptive homes, the Heart Gallery aims to strengthen community understanding of foster care and inspire more people to get involved.
The organization emphasizes that community support plays a vital role. Contributions help fund photo sessions, awareness campaigns, and exhibitions that bring attention to youth waiting for adoption.
“The single most common factor for children who develop resilience is at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult.”
