AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – On this segment of Hearts, Hope & Home, resources for families going through the adoption process are many, but funding can be hard to come by.
In 2024, the Heart Gallery of the Panhandle Plains made two donations of nearly $60,000 to help support families through the adoption process.
Nearly half of the money went to a licensed counselor in the area to help families after the adoption, providing long-term resources.
The money funded therapy for the adoptive and biological children, as well as the parents, including marriage and group counseling.
Officials say it is imperative that they maintain this funding so they can maintain these adoptive homes.
“The funding is what holds families together. There are individuals in this community that are working tirelessly to support pre and post-adoption, but if the funding doesn’t exist, the job doesn’t exist,” said Lee Ann Lefevre, licensed professional counselor.
Through the first year of this grant, Lefevre says they have served nearly 850 individuals.
“If we don’t have the resources collectively to serve these families, then when things get hard, we are going to run the risk that the family would not be capable of maintaining a child in their home even though they very much want to and very much love the child,” said Lefevre.
Lefevre is holding an all-day learning symposium at the Amarillo CASA office for families and children involved in the adoption and foster process.
The event will take place Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
They will be talking in-depth about issues children face.
